Martin Scorsese is the first name that pops up when talking about crime drama. Almost all of his films right from Taxi Driver in 1976, to Goodfellas in 1990, and to The Departed in 2006 have made huge contributions not only to this genre but filmmaking as a whole. His long term and continued pairing either with Robert De Niro or Leonardo DiCaprio has proved to be a recipe for success on the box office time and again.
